The development is scheduled to open in 2022, subject to planning approval, and will be able to support the simultaneous production of numerous films and TV shows, with each of the 14 sound stages covering over 20,000 sqft.

The design for the new studios is being delivered by UMC Architects, Fairhurst and Hoare Lea, with Potter Raper Partnership undertaking the quantity surveying and project management of the scheme.

The construction team will optimise the design for sustainability, including sourcing materials that are local and low carbon. Once operational, Sky Studios Elstree will not use gas or fossil fuels to power the day-to-day running of the site – instead, it will source renewable energy with the capability to generate up to 20 per cent of energy on-site through solar energy.

Opera House

Retail

Work has commenced on Opera Square; a site that is poised to be the biggest ever city center “mixed-use” development outside the capital and set to be constructed over a six-year phased duration. Demolition and enabling works were started by John Sisk & Son Ltd at the 1.62-hectare site that will have the capacity for up to 3,000 employees across a 450,000 sq ft campus.

Among the key elements of the project will be a 14-storey office building; a five-storey aparthotel with retail units on ground and basement levels; an over-basement office building with retail units and a restaurant/café; a new library and significant public realm space.

It is hoped the massive development, which will include a new public square with pedestrian links to the city, will place Limerick as an attractive location for various investor companies.

Assembly Block C

Public Sector Utilities

PCE Ltd has been awarded a contract by Galliford Try to design, manufacture, and construct a HybriDfMA office building frame using off-Site manufactured structural steel and precast concrete components together with in situ reinforced concrete.

With modern methods of construction at the forefront of planning for Assembly C, the project team at PCE considered every avenue where they had planned tasks that were traditionally completed on-site and looked to amalgamate these into an offsite manufacturing solution.

Building C of the central Bristol Assembly development is a 14-storey tower adjacent to the River Avon for property developer Bell Hammer.

The HybriDfMA framed building will provide 92,000 sq.ft. of office space utilizing PCE’s experience of Modern Methods of Construction (MMC), Offsite engineering, and providing as much Offsite construction as possible in a very busy city center location.

Building C is the second and tallest of three units to be built in a phased construction program. The Assembly development will include a new public area, with connections through the site and a new floating pontoon.

The development will create a new destination for Bristol and a new type of people-friendly workspace. The plan draws from the character and context of the site, integrating it into the city.

Central Bank Bridge

Public Sector Utilities

Timelapse project:

Walls Construction is one of Ireland’s leading construction companies for the last 72 years.

The company is constructing a stunning new 30-meter link bridge connecting the Central Bank of Ireland office on North Wall Quay to their new Dublin Landings building. The steel-framed temporary structure has provided support and access for the complex bridge steel and glass installation. It has also allowed the bridge construction to progress whilst safely maintaining emergency egress and fire tender routes. Spanning 30m long, 12m wide, and 6m above the podium slab, the temporary steel-framed crash deck is required to maintain fire tender access and emergency egress paths from the live Central Bank.

The steel & timber from this temporary structure will be re-used on another major Walls Construction Limited city-centre development in a bid to reduce waste as part of Walls Construction Ltd 2025 Roadmap.

Moneypoint Synchronous Condenser

Energy

Following a competitive tender process, Siemens Energy Limited was awarded the contract for the engineering, procurement and construction of the new €50m Synchronous Compensator in Moneypoint Power Station. The synchronous condenser will incorporate the flywheel to provide high inertia to sustain grid frequency, reactive power for voltage control and short circuit capacity to strengthen the power grid as more renewables will be integrated to the power system. Siemens Energy will deliver this project as a turnkey in 2022 and will provide after sales maintenance services for ten years with remote diagnostics. This will be the first synchronous condenser with the world’s largest flywheel to be installed in the Irish power grid to compensate for the intermittent nature of renewable energy sources and to provide grid stability.

Siemens-Moneypoint-CGI
CGI of Siemens-Moneypoint. Courstesy: Engineers Ireland

Due to the intermittency of wind energy, in particular, grid stabilisation technologies have an increasingly important role in a successful energy transition. The Moneypoint Synchronous Compensator with flywheel comes in as a cost effective and zero carbon solution to strengthening the stability and resilience of the Irish grid. Siemens Energy provided an optimum technical and competitive solution for Moneypoint in its continuing key role in Ireland’s electricity system.

Solar-powered construction cameras have been installed on this site to monitor the progress of the projects and to capture time-lapse video footage for marketing purposes.

Dunkettle Interchange

Public Sector Utilities

The Dunkettle Interchange is located approximately 6 kilometres East of Cork City, Ireland. The interchange is at the intersection of the M8/N8 Road from Dublin to Cork with the N25 Road from Waterford to Cork and with the N40 South Ring Road via the Jack Lynch Tunnel.

The current interchange arrangement has free flow for the traffic going in an east - west direction but forces north - south traffic and turning traffic to use a traffic signal controlled roundabout. It is proposed to upgrade the interchange to achieve free flow for key movements and to include measures to remove locally generated traffic from the interchange.

The project includes changes to the N8, the N25 and the N40 and links to the R623 in Little Island and Burys Bridge in Dunkettle while also making provision for pedestrian and cyclist facilities. It is an investment of €215 million in total and is anticipated to be completed by Q1 2024.

The Dunkettle Interchange Upgrade objectives are driven by the need to improve operational deficiencies associated with the existing layout. These operational difficulties, if not addressed, will be exacerbated by continuing traffic growth over the coming years.

Cork RDO opted to use 6 cameras from Evercam on the site to provide a live view of the traffic to let everyone who uses the roads know the traffic status, and to show that it will improve when they have finished building the new Dunkettle Interchange.
