Our first webinar of 2025 featured a rich discussion on integrating technology into modern construction workflows. Hosted by Eoin ONeill, Head of Customer Success at Evercam, this session welcomed Ian Donaldson, Project Director of The Forum in Gloucester, UK. With over 30 years in construction, Ian shared his journey of leveraging innovative tools to navigate the complexities of large-scale projects.

A Background in Adaptation

Ian began by reflecting on his career, which spans civil engineering, healthcare, waste-to-energy, and international projects like data centers and convention centers. Having witnessed significant changes over his three decades in the industry, Ian emphasized the evolution of safety, quality, and stakeholder managementaspects of building that have become increasingly complex. Despite advancements, Ian noted that The fundamentals of construction remain the same: people, processes, and tools.

The Forum Project: Technology in Action

Ians current project, The Forum, is a 100 million mixed-use development in Gloucester. The Forum is a prime example of how technology can be used to transform construction workflows. Ian described how his team used BIM models and 4D planning to visualize the projects construction sequence and address potential challenges early. Drone footage, integrated with Evercams platform, provided clear aerial updates, while live construction cameras gave stakeholders real-time visibility into site progress.

A critical example of how technology saved Ian an enormous amount of time and money was during the discovery of a 24-inch subterranean gas main diversion by using Evercams construction cameras and BIM overlays. The insight gained from the camera view combined with BIM technology enabled Ians team to quickly adapt plans, communicate changes clearly and transparently, and ultimately minimize downtime and delays. The ability to see at different levels and during different stages of the project was truly priceless, highlighting the value of construction live capture, BIM integration, and visual records, not only in overcoming the challenge itself, but in promoting trust among clients and local authorities.

Technologys Role in Addressing Challenges

For Ian, technology is not about tech for techs sake but about simplifying workflows and building trust. Its all about having a single source of truth, he explained. He shared how integrated live construction cameras and BIM overlays facilitated real-time comparisons between plans and actual site progress, consistently helping his team address challenges, such as the unforeseen utility diversions.

Why Records Matter

Ian stressed the importance of accurate records, sharing how tools like Evercams construction cameras have replaced traditional diaries with dynamic visual logs. These records streamline communication with stakeholders while serving as critical evidence during disputes. Photographic evidence speaks for itself, Ian said, noting the value of visual images in project management and regulatory compliance.

Collaboration Across Teams

One key takeaway from Ians experience was the importance of fostering collaboration across diverse teams. With design teams working remotely and stakeholders spread across several locations, integrated visual tools like jobsite cameras have become indispensable. Ian remarked, When you see workers on site actively using the tools because they find them practical, you know youve got it right.

Reflections on the Future

Looking ahead, Ian shared his excitement about the potential of emerging technologies like AI and machine learning in construction. He highlighted Evercams Copilot feature, which uses advanced analytics to track site activity and improve productivity. Copilot helps teams make better use of their data, answering questions that were previously difficult to address. While cautious about relying too much on technology, he stressed techs ability to bring in younger talent and make projects more efficient.

Main Points

  • Plan with Precision: Use tools like BIM and 4D planning to visualize and adapt to project complexities.
  • Leverage Visual Records: Integrated construction cameras provide a single source of truth, streamlining communication and mitigating disputes.
  • Promote Collaboration: Practical tools encourage team adoption, ensuring alignment across diverse stakeholders.
  • Adapt with Technology: While not a tech enthusiast, Ian underscored the need to embrace innovations that add value.

Closing Thoughts

Ian concluded with a reminder that successful projects rest on three pillars: good clients, good teams, and good tools. Technology, when thoughtfully integrated, can enhance all three, enabling the industry to tackle current challenges while preparing for the future. Its about letting people be the best version of themselves, he said.
